***🧵NEW RESEARCH w/ @OppInsights *** Can we create opportunity by transforming neighborhoods? Our latest study examines the HOPE VI program—$17B invested to revitalize 262 high-poverty public housing projects into mixed-income communities across the US.

We mapped low-income neighborhoods across the US that could benefit from connection-based revitalization. While solutions must fit local context, HOPE VI shows that connecting isolated neighborhoods to the broader community can meaningfully improve economic opportunity.

These lessons extend beyond public housing. Across the US, low-income neighborhoods that are more socially connected to nearby affluent areas see better outcomes for kids. We don’t see the reverse for high-income areas—so integration can help low-income kids without much harm.
