📅 On this day in Zimbabwe Cricket history (18 May 2000)
Zimbabwe walked out at Lord’s for the opening day of their 2000 tour of England — a landmark moment for a nation still less than a decade into its life as a Test-playing country.
Led by Heath Streak and featuring stars such as Andy Flower, Grant Flower and Guy Whittall, Zimbabwe arrived at the Home of Cricket determined to prove they belonged at the highest level of the game.
England, however, dominated the opening exchanges. Michael Atherton anchored the innings superbly with 137, while Graeme Hick added 100 as the hosts closed in control.
For Zimbabwe, Heath Streak once again led from the front with the ball, finishing with 3 wickets, while Andy Blignaut and Travis Friend battled hard in difficult English conditions.
Despite the eventual heavy defeat, the occasion itself marked another important chapter in Zimbabwe’s rise within international cricket at the turn of the millennium 🇿🇼

Why do many African boys become extremely protective when it comes to their single mothers or sisters having relationships?
Myself included.
A boy can want a girlfriend of his own, support his friends dating, and celebrate love everywhere else, but suddenly become a strict security guard at home.
Is it protectiveness? Fear of seeing them hurt? Possessiveness? Distrust of men? Or growing up feeling responsible for the family?
I’ve noticed this a lot. What causes it?

My distant cousin ran away from home when she was 14. Went to Dundee... well thats where she was spotted. She was under the care of my distant Aunt. She ner went to look for her. The mother was notified ( working in Jhb), didn't come to look for her daughter. About 4 years later, my father spotted her in Dundee and caught her. She told him straight away that she doesn't want to return home because her Aunts husband was sensually abusing her. Her Aunt despite being told on numerous times, accused her of lying. Told my Dad where she lived (with a man from Orange Groove Dairy). She had a child by then. Said she will only return if her Mother fetched her. My Dad left her and came to Jhb to look for the Mother. The mother had her own life with a Moz man and had 3 kids. The mother agreed to fetch her. Fast ffwd, she came to live with her Mother. History repeated itself. Slept with stepfather and fell pregnant. Mother chased her away. Went to live in a squatter camp with her two kids by now with another Moz man. Fell pregnant with baby number 3. We came to know after her brutal death with her 3 kids that the stepfather killed them. Apparently baby number 3 was fathered by stepfather. They continued their affair. Out of jeleousy, the live in Moz guy burnt them in the shack and ran back to Moz. Told a friend that it was revenge. At the time she was 24 with 3 kids. The Aunt in KZN never left her man who sexually abused her Sister's child. The Mother in Jhb never left her Moz man. My Cousin paid the ultimate price. I cut of all my relations with them.

Lenny Gwata and Beater Mangethe were once one of Zimbabwe’s recognizable celebrity couples, each carrying their own public identity long before tragedy struck.
Lenny Gwata built his name as a talented footballer, remembered for his time with Highlanders and Dynamos as well as his football journey in South Africa.
Beater Mangethe had already become known in entertainment circles through television.
She featured in the ZTV drama Stitsha where she played Thuli, a bold, lively township character who made her a household name and won viewers with her memorable screen presence.
Together they built a family and became a couple many people knew and followed.
Then 2010 brought heartbreaking news.
On 12 April 2010, Lenny died in Johannesburg after illness. Family, friends, and football fans were still trying to process his death when tragedy struck again. Just two months later, on 12 June 2010, Beater also passed away.
The deaths shocked many Zimbabweans.
In a painful twist of fate, their son lost both parents within a short space of time. Their story is remembered not only for football and television fame, but also for one of Zimbabwe’s saddest stories of love and loss.

90s Zimbabwe trivia:
Most of us remember the crying girl in Albert Nyathi’s Senzeni Na? and assumed she was the singer.
Every Zimbabwean who watched that song on Ezomgido cried. Anyone saying “not me” is a liar. Not even a small liar, a full-time, overtime, pensionable liar 😂😂
Turns out the girl in the video was Sasani NaThami.
The original voice was reportedly Prudence Katomeni, who missed the shoot because she was writing O-Levels.
Zimbabwe had plot twists before social media 😭🇿🇼
