EVERYONE’s battery will break. You could be in financial difficulties and not afford internet; that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to play what you have.

Any PlayStation game purchased digitally after March's sytem update will reportedly now require an internet connection once every 30 days to validate the license 🎮 If the console stays offline longer than that, the games will not launch until you reconnect (via @MrZackXOfficial)

@AdamShurey @insigzeroes @CultureCrave But you can’t see that. Either disconnect for 30 days or replace your CMOS battery, then come back to me. If you want direct proof the timer exists now, then check on PS4. Unlike PS5 the timer IS shown in the PS4 menu UI.

@CultureCrave Can we please get a better primary source than someone asking a customer service chat bot? This is insane as this is a big policy change that can have regulators breathing down Sony's neck, and this is just dumb reporting that isn't doing anything.

@RainbowzZz9 @AdamShurey @k1rallik Yeah. It doesn’t. Because it’s a UI limitation. Not that the timer doesn’t exist. It IS there. The timer is running. Someone removed the CMOS battery which tracks the timer, and they weren’t able to play a game they bought. Sony support confirmed it

I’ve also been experimenting with this, and I can confirm that if your CMOS battery dies, any digital game with the timer becomes unplayable again, even if the console is set as the primary. This is a digital game I purchased with money yesterday. I didn’t claim it with PS Plus.

Holy fuck. We all knew this was coming sooner rather than later. Digital services have been getting the masses comfortable with not really "owning" what you buy for awhile now, but this is straight up insidious. They're testing the waters to see how far they can go. THIS is why I have always supported and advocated for physical media. It's not just video games either, every company wants you on a subscription for anything and everything so they can continue to milk you forever. This is downright manipulative, shady and borderline a scam, I'll never tell people what to/not buy, but until this "issue" is resolved I'm not purchasing anything from Sony personally.

@JeffHerc @ManaByte It does. You can’t see it on PS5 menu, only PS4… however the timer is still there and running down even on PS5. It’s just not visible because the operating system menu doesn’t display it. The bug isn’t that the timer is running down, the bug is people found out.

This thread confirms that the PS5 DRM is real, and not an "unintentional bug" like some accounts are trying to claim. It affects every game purchased since March, which means it's been active for two months now. An "unintentional bug" would've been fixed by now. It's clearly intentional and the only thing is "unintended" is people finding out about it via the timer being visible on the PS4. This means it affects major games like Crimson Desert, Pragmata, and Saros.

@AdamShurey @k1rallik The timer doesn’t appear on PS5 but it’s still there in the background supposedly. From what u can see the timer is only visible to the user on PS4 but it’s still there on PS5. That’s coming from the guy who got Bloodborne running at 60FPS on a PS4.

Some horrible updates from PlayStation about DRM Before this update your digital PS4/PS5 games where permanent , play offline forever basically Now (new purchases only) they added a 30-day timer. Game locks until you go online and "Restore Licenses". Old games are unchanged.

Hugely terrible DRM has now been rolled out to all PS4 and PS5 digital games. Every digital game you buy now requires an online check-in every 30 days. If you buy a digital game and don't connect your console to the internet for 30 days, your license will be removed.

They are all pointless as they can be bought separately for players who want them; for the majority they are unwanted

Future Call of Duty titles will no longer join Game Pass Ultimate on day one. They will join this tier the following holiday after launch (about a year later).
