My observation of SF is that the city is more consensus-driven than contrarian. The talent density is amazing, but everyone’s regurgitating the same thing. People think they’re contrarian because they’re working on things the mainstream doesn’t understand yet. Sure.
X amplifies this - the SF tech timeline is a consensus-manufacturing engine. where people are rewarded for legibility within existing frame, not for introducing genuinely foreign ones.
An example I like: @benjamin_bolte of OpenAI argued that SF VCs are suddenly interested in robotics not because they have a thesis about embodied intelligence, but because they need to pivot from B2B SaaS. The contrarianism is pattern-matching away from a category that stopped working.
