@exQUIZitely 80's Euroshmups (Xenon & Battle Squadron stick out in my mind) always had great visual style and music but there's a reason why the sub-genre gathered its rep for being clunky, slow, and unbalanced. They also lacked the cinematic flare that elevated JP shmups to operatic levels.

Xenon II (1989), by the legendary Bitmap Brothers. Yes, it has a low frame rate. Yes, movement is a tad sluggish. So what? This was (and in many ways still is) a game with the most badass soundtrack and effects ever. Megablast, hell yeah!

An absolute classic turns 40 years old this year: Rampage from 1986 by Bally Midway, where up to three players simultaneously (!) unleash chaos as giant monsters. You play as George (ape), Lizzie (lizard), and Ralph (wolf) - humans mutated by Scumlabs experiments. I mean, what could go wrong? You smash skyscrapers across 128 North American cities, eat citizens for health (yummy!), flatten tanks, and rip helicopters from the skies in King Kong style. Once you lose your health you revert to a naked human shuffling off-screen; it always made me laugh. Its very simple, yet addictive co-op destruction (no complex objectives, just the purest of monster-movie chaos!) made it a commercial hit, with later ports to NES, C64, Atari, and sequels like World Tour, plus a 2018 Dwayne Johnson film (which sucked, but that was to be expected).

It isn't really game development unless your workstation just straight up and dies during Pre-Alpha. Softdrink of choice spilled onto a server by sleep-deprived developer gets honorable mention. Share your game development crisis stories here:
