Productivity has more than doubled in the last 50 years so why have our working hours barely budged?Rethinking the future of work to prioritise leisure time over ever-growing consumption could be the key to unlocking a greener, low-carbon future. @oxfordgeography @ecioxford 1/2

@laurimyllyvirta fantastic thread, thanks. my question: what has driven the growth in energy intensity? 5.2% GDP growth seems led by service sector (5.8% growth) rather than manufacturing (4.7%), which should produce the opposite result. so what has made economic activity more energy-intensive?

Tomorrow, the Chinese government releases two key policy documents for the year: the government work report and the annual development plan. Here are some key questions to look out for🧵

Thermal power generation fell 1%, steel 2% and cement 11%, just as reported earlier and just as I assumed in my analysis. These numbers are impossible to square with the reported increase in coal consumption.

China's official statistical communique says that CO2 emissions increased 2.2% in 2022, and coal consumption a whopping 4.3%. Data in the release strengthens my assessment that coal consumption in 2022 is being over-reported.

@stephendziedzic It is, I’m told, actually quite remarkable. I’m in Suva too and locals tell me it’s normally dry season by now, but the rain has persisted for weeks after it normally stops.

In the least breaking news in the history of news that is not breaking and is in fact perfectly whole and utterly, perfectly intact: it is raining in Suva

@pretentiouswhat I believe the 2030 'target' of 120 GW is an industry association prediction rather than official policy. Official target is 70 GW by 2025. Do we really think that approvals of third-gen nuclear will speed up between now and 2030 as renewables $ keeps dropping? (genuine Q)

China has to add 8-10 GW-level reactors per year, every year, if it's even going to get close to its 2030 capacity targets. We should expect to be seeing and hearing a lot more about new nuclear approvals on a regular basis going forward. Link: stock.finance.sina.com.cn/stock/go.php/v…

6 more new nuclear reactors for China! State Council announced today Haiyang Phase II, Sanmen Phase II, and Lufeng Phase I are all approved (2 reactors each). Sanmen II & Haiyang II will be AP1000s, like their first Phases. Lufeng was originally supposed to be AP1000 but...

This week the Morrison government appointed a bunch of ‘mates’ to key statutory positions. Much of the commentary has focused on nepotism - which is fair enough because it is pretty revolting. But I reckon this is just another step in a deliberate wrecking agenda 🧵: #auspol

@mattjcan That is correct, Matt! It is very naive to believe that a net zero by 2050 commitment is enough, especially when researchers and economists say we can get it done by 2035.

Every hour somebody disagrees or contradicts another in public life. But why is it standard journalistic practise to describe almost any contradiction as a “slap down” which denotes a violent & humiliating blow. Why characterise normal discourse in violent, or abusive terms?

Most people don't realise this, but the majority of high-income nations have already significantly exceeded their fair share of the carbon budget for 2 degrees. Their "zero by 2050" targets are therefore woefully inadequate.

China’s frantic efforts to decarbonise will result in many such instances of top-down planning overriding local traditions and identity. Fantastic piece by @oliverlees6
