Asked my guy @JeffPassan if he'd film a quick shoutout for @MaxMannisPod. Wasn't ready for what came next.

March Madness just doesn't hit the same when you're not watching it in class hoping the teacher doesn't notice

“I’m glad I did not give into the fear." Spencer Horwitz played for Team Israel in this year's World Baseball Classic. The Post-Gazette asked him to journal his experience. From home runs to death threats, here's everything he documented: post-gazette.com/sports/pirates…

One week from this very moment, we get to start our yearly seven-month cycle of mental health being dictated by 26 men throwing and hitting clumps of rawhide with chunks of wood. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

This team was perfect. This is not about basketball. This is about greatness. Far from perfect in practice and far from perfect in games - but this team was perfect in all the ways that actually mattered. The fact that they were pretty damn good on the court too? Awesome, but secondary. Yes, in their minds too. This core group spent almost three of their four years with what many would consider a burden, but what they considered a privilege. This group played more than basketball. They represented a people and a nation under attack. And they did that perfectly. They also set the stage for this program as it moves into the future – on and off the court. They raised our level in ways that we wish nobody ever has to do again. I always love to talk about how much I learn each year from the teams I have the privilege to coach and work with. These last few years have changed many of our lives – for sure mine. To watch the resiliency, confidence and courage these student-athletes exemplified was awe-inspiring. Different backgrounds, different observance levels, different beliefs – one brotherhood. In all my years, I don’t know that I have had a group of guys this invested in each other and their people. The shift of our focus as a program from sport to humanity somehow made us better at basketball too. These guys defined playing for a purpose. The difference is the purpose was bigger than just the sport itself. You want to win? Everyone does. You work hard? Everyone works hard. What separates you on and off the court is your “why”. We found our program “why” thanks to this special group, and we will never forget it. Thanks @maxzakheim, Zevi, Roy, Dothan, Hillel, Tom, @arishklyar12, Or - for teaching me how to lead with confidence and perspective. Our future success will be yours as well.

For the past week I've smiled at least once daily remembering that us opening in San Francisco means Cole doesn't have to worry about Devers this year
