Today I signed with @MistralAI as a Research Engineer. Hard to put into words how excited I am.

I've reached a level of french where people congratulate me. The next level is loosing my foreigner bonus and them just thinking i'm retarded and can't speak right.

In a way it matches my personal experiences. I was in the bay for a little more than a year a couple years back. And for me tech is a big part, but so was the counter culture history of the place and it's outsized (pop) cultural impact. Sadly, I saw mostly remnants of it and not that much that was actually living. That may have been due to covid, but I feel that a lot of creatives etc were just priced out and left. And you need these people for cultural richness, I guess. As you wrote. SF / SV is great at funding audacious early endeavors. But they will only fund productizable organisations. And art a + culture is often not that. In the long run, I think this Tech + Start up monoculture makes SF a less appealing place to live. Even though this exact monoculture can be great for the people who seek out just that. But the result is some mode collapse and in the extreme, everyone in SF is the same person. (a bit of a stream of consciousness rant, haha).

given the Jacobi Conjecture and @OpenAI accidentally hacking into @huggingface, I would like to remind everyone that this was 4 years ago and now we live in a world where I could not imagine talking to the computer not being a thing

Will anyone win the AI race? Arthur Mensch, the boss of Mistral, a French AI firm, thinks not. The market is simply too vast for one company to control, he argues, and the world should hope it stays that way. He spoke to Alex Hern, The Economist’s AI writer, on the latest episode of Inside Tech: bit.ly/3RHCqfk

This is incredibly sad. Like how soulless do you have to become to even come up with something like this. Or be like a 14 year old edgelord. ffs people. we should do better, as a species.

Writing on single pieces of paper taken out of a perforated notebook is infinitely better than a singular notebook like a moleskin (surprise, I've changed my mind again)
