“Democratic countries tend to be high-tax countries, because taxation and democracy reinforce each other,” writes Vanessa Williamson. Meanwhile, tyrants “avoid imposing taxes because they fear the obligations that come with any reliance on tax revenue.” fam.ag/4t76NsL

I’d like to think this trend will persist in 🇮🇹, but it is likely the result of a large backlog of foreigners who have lived here long enough—10 years!—to finally be granted citizenship. Still positive tho. Many of them are probably parents now, so their children will share it.
EU_Eurostat@EU_Eurostat

The highest naturalisation rate among EU countries in 2024 was in 🇸🇪 Sweden, with 7.5 citizenships granted per 100 non-national residents, followed by 🇮🇹 Italy (4.1) and 🇪🇸 Spain and the 🇳🇱 Netherlands (each 3.9). Learn more👉 link.europa.eu/hcNVwp

Over the past 25 years, Germany has pursued an energy transition by phasing out nuclear power and expanding solar and wind—at a cost of around €500 billion in subsidies. The result: installed capacity has more than doubled, yet electricity generation has declined. The reason is structural. Reliable, dispatchable power was replaced by weather-dependent sources. The consequences are severe: rising energy costs, falling competitiveness, and growing pressure on energy-intensive industries. The key question remains: How do you run an industrial economy on a system that produces less when it matters most?

Fascinating voting patterns in the latest Italian referendum (Richer) large cities opposed the far-right government's constitutional reform more than (poorer) suburban areas. But *within large cities*, the richer medieval city centres supported the government more.
Gennaro Carotenuto@GenCar5

🇩🇪&🇫🇷 were Europe's largest net electricity exporters. Now 🇩🇪 is the 2nd largest importer (behind only 🇮🇹, an epic fail of its own). Tiny 🇸🇪🇳🇴 (& huge 🇫🇷) plug the hole. The principal maker of 🇩🇪's ruin just got an EU award. Her minister runs the EU Commission. Clown central.

Germany Energy Minister Katherina Reiche: The phase-out of nuclear power was a huge mistake — a huge mistake. We now miss that energy. So, the only way to secure supply is gas.

The aesthetic was called Global Village Coffee House and it was a reaction to 80s luxury and excess, where people wanted something that felt more authentic and less mass produced. They wanted to feel like they were in a coffee shop looking at the dogshit art on the wall, knowing it sucked but at least it was real and came from the heart. When I see it, I'm reminded of stores that didn't feel like sterile labs and felt like shops. It sounds like a Nora Jones CD. It tastes like a whole wheat bread turkey sandwich and mediocre black coffee. It's a comfy kind of nostalgia.

It's Biden, actually. More accomplishments, more quickly. Don't even get me started on how much got done under Obama because of Biden's expertise.

#referendum
