Red Bull found a defect with the rear wing, which caused the crash. It didn't close properly at the end of the straight mode zone
Mekies confirms in the press release it was a loss of 'aero performance' at the rear.

I knew there was some margin in that last sector.. I steered in, and it was immediately completely gone, I couldn't even try and correct it. We have to look at the rear wing, that it closed on time, because this felt really weird." Q: We thought maybe you had pushed the car too much? It’s astonishing to me how many people leverage anything against max but literally ignoring extreme safety issues is just wild.
Yeah he may have slowed by a tenth but he still put in one of the best final sectors of the weekend, we’ve seen people literally pass away for not respecting safety rules.
A similar issue or one lock up into that corner at the speed George was doing could have plowed him straight into Max.
The FIA should be ashamed for allowing that pole lap to stand.
