As a psychologist, this is an interesting video 🧠 (long and nerdy post so buckle up)
All three pros say C2-GC3 is a low rank, whereas Coach LBP says Golds. Hmmm 🤔
In cognitive psych, there's a concept called "anchoring" ⚓ where when we make certain estimates or choices based on an initial reference point that biases our decision
Typically, this initial reference point is given to us in a problem or everyday conversation. But in this video, there is no objective reference made- only "low" as a description of the rank
This activates what's called self-referential anchoring, which means the subject has to look inward and use their own personal experience to create an estimate, which then unknowingly serves as their anchor point
The pros likely have something like 2400 MMR as their anchor, so they select C2-GC3 as "low ranks" despite those ranks objectively being in the 98th percentile of players 🎖
Meanwhile, the Coach who is estimating at a lower reference point says Golds, which are usually the bottom 33% of players
So pros naturally estimate a "low" rank as a higher MMR as compared to their lower-rank Coach. Neat! 🧠
But then beyond that, the *perceptual* gap in skill is another factor in these reference points!
Skill isn't linear from Bronze 1 to SSL. It's also entirely possible that pro players perceive a skill gap much wider than an average person.
If the "chart" of average skill as rank increases begins to go exponentially higher above SSL, then pros reasonably aren't perceiving the same gap between 2400 and 2100 as a Champ perceives compared to a plat
If 2400 gameplay is much better than 2200, and 2200 is far better than 1900, then at that scale, 2400 pro-level play is essentially so high up as a default anchor that all the ranks perceptually blend together. 📈
After all, what IS the difference in skill when you're an RL demigod comparing two ranks so incredibly far below your level? Anyone who has ever played a professional player knows how incredibly humbling it is- it's genuinely like they're playing a different game
Thus, this small video by NIP socials (which are great btw, I love your video content) actually is a pretty fun delve into the inner psychology of skill perception 👍
