@psudmant These are good examples of transfers ! Transposable elements might be « easily » acquired as they can replicate upon acquisition, and be kept even being slightly deleterious or neutral. At the opposite, it is likely that acquired genes must be instantly beneficial to be kept !

@barrygoldman1 @Pacificklaus We discuss some of the main hypothesis for the mechanisms, but we really don’t know which. We searched for integrated viruses sequences around the transfers genes, but we did not find anything 🤷🏻‍♂️

After the eye, the highest expression of non-visual opsins was found in gonadal tissues, supporting the recent observation that these genes play a crucial role in reproduction.

Finally, we found that, not only visual opsins , but also non-visual opsins, are mostly expressed in the eye, with an almost perfectly conserved expression pattern across the evolution of fishes.
