The Backstory:
The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and Anthropic signed a $200 million contract to integrate its Claude AI model into classified military networks.
There was a clash because of the build in restrictions prohibiting use for mass domestic surveillance of Americans or fully autonomous lethal weapons
Tensions escalated in January 2026 when Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a memo mandating that all DoD AI contracts allow "any lawful use" without limitations, clashing with Anthropic's policies.
After failed negotiations, Hegseth met with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on February 24, 2026, issuing an ultimatum: Drop the safeguards by February 27 at 5:01 p.m. ET, or face severe repercussions, including contract cancellation, designation as a "supply chain risk" (a label typically for foreign adversaries), and potential invocation of the Defense Production Act to force compliance!!
On February 26, Amodei publicly rejected the demands in a blog post, stating Anthropic "cannot in good conscience" remove the checks, as they could undermine democratic values.
This defiance prompted the open letter from nearly 1,000 Google and OpenAI employees, rallying support against government overreach and displaying unity instead of divide.
