@dandi_saucedo Turkey is definitely an occupier, and that status is recognized by the United Nations and international law. Its presence in northern Cyprus is an ongoing military occupation in violation of UN resolutions and the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus.

@Maxxrido Both Turkey and Greece tend to pick specific points to defend their own positions on this issue. This is not a matter where Turkey can be justified as an aggressor or occupier.

@dandi_saucedo Sadly, modern Turkish leaders still follow the same mindset, dreaming of “Blue Homeland” and claiming lands that never belonged to them. Μy criticism is aimed at the governments and their leaders, not the citizens who simply want peace and stability.

@Maxxrido +Otherwise, we would expect all European nations to leave Europe and return to where they lived before the Migration Period. Holding modern-day Turks accountable for events that happened 600 years ago makes no sense.

@Maxxrido +Every empire caused suffering to its own people as well — including Byzantium and Rome. The Ottoman Empire was no different in this regard. In fact, its treatment of the Turks living in Anatolia was often the same.

@dandi_saucedo Every nation tells its history through its own lens, but facts remain. The Ottomans conquered the Balkans through war, violence, and forced conversions. That land was not theirs , it belonged to Greeks, Serbs, Bulgarians, Armenians, and others. Turks were invaders.

@dandi_saucedo Yes, there were terrorist organizations on both sides, like EOKA B’ and TMT, and both committed crimes. But these were actions of extremist groups, not nations. They do not justify a foreign invasion and 52 years of military occupation.

@dandi_saucedo The Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 was not a “necessary intervention.” Turkey used the Guarantee Treaty as an excuse after the Greek coup but went far beyond its mandate. The result was thousands of deaths, rapes, missing people, and 160,000 refugees. That wasn’t protection.

@Maxxrido I’m told that I’ve been influenced by propaganda. I’m aware that not everything Turks did in history was right. However, I’m tired of being part of the side that is constantly expected to self-criticize. Why was Turkey’s intervention in Cyprus considered necessary? ++

@dandi_saucedo Have you even read what the Annan Plan really proposed? Are you a Turkish Cypriot? Do you have any connection to Cyprus, or do you just repeat Turkish propaganda, from a country responsible for genocide in Pontus, Asia Minor, Cyprus, Armenia, Kurdistan, and Syria?

@dandi_saucedo I’m a Greek Cypriot, and many Turkish Cypriots in my area chose to live here after 1974 because they suffered from the behavior of the Turkish settlers illegally brought to the island by Turkey. Yet, some still try to twist the truth and justify the occupation

@Maxxrido Greek Cypriots have not wanted Turks on the island, as evidenced by attacks against Turks before 1970. If you refuse to recognize the Turkish state established on the island and at the same time reject reunification (Annan Plan) then what is your plan for the Turks living there?
