From today, it will cost me R490 extra to fill up my tank with diesel. That means every single kilometer I drive costs me R2.30! If you want to work out your fuel cost, use this calculation: Fuel Price per Litre x Litres used per 100km = Total cost for 100km Total cost for 100km / 100 = Cost per single kilometre

Why does a "dignified" funeral in one culture mean financial ruin, while in another, it’s a quiet affair? What started as a simple conversation reveals the financial pressure behind how we say goodbye. As an international buyer, you qualify for a mortgage in South Africa when buying your dream home. However, the law explicitly determines how much you are legally allowed to borrow from local financial institutions, as well as the regulatory conditions which should be met to obtain such a loan. mayaonmoney.co.za/a-foreign-buye…

@Simz_Ntlemeza Government announced it is cushioning the fuel blow by reducing the fuel levy by R3 per liter for one month. This will cost R6bn in lost tax revenue, but will be a big relief for consumers.

Is skipping your daily coffee really the secret to financial freedom? In my experience with the City Press Money Makeover, I’ve seen that while big structural costs (like your car or insurance) have the biggest impact, our day-to-day habits matter for a different reason. It’s not just about the R1000 a month. It’s about whether that R1000 is buying you value or if it’s just a "leak" in your budget because you're in a rush. Financial well-being requires discipline, but it also requires realism. My rule of thumb: If it brings you genuine joy and fits your plan, keep it. If it’s an unconscious habit draining your goals, cut it. What is the one "small luxury" you refuse to give up? news24.com/business/money…

April's fuel hike: how to protect your budget... The table by Naked Insurance below illustrates how future increases could affect your monthly petrol costs, assuming fuel efficiency of 15 km per litre. Quick tips to cut costs: Plan your travel: Combine errands into one journey and work from home when possible to reduce weekly mileage. Share the load: Carpool with colleagues to split costs, or consider if your household could transition to a single-car use setup to save. Refine your driving: Avoid hard acceleration and braking and travel outside peak hours to avoid fuel-heavy stop-start traffic.

If Trump can find a way to exit this war without losing face, we should survive the short term fuel shocks. But if this goes on for months, we are in trouble. news24.com/business/money…

Over the last year, interest rate cuts have had a positive impact on household resilience, but not enough to make a significant difference, as households are still struggling with low economic growth and high real interest rates. The latest @AltronFinTech Household Resilience Index found that although households' financial resilience had increased by 2.1% compared to a year ago, this increase has been driven largely by withdrawals from retirement funds since the introduction of the Two Pot retirement system. Why I’m asking the questions I was always told were "off-limits." For ten years, Mapalo Makhu and I have had the kind of honest conversations most people only have behind closed doors. We realised that in South Africa, we don't just manage money; we manage expectations, heritage, and sometimes, a lot of cultural guilt. In our brand-new podcast, "Money: It is not black or white," we aren't holding back. It’s time to stop judging and start asking. Join @WomanAndFinance and me as we navigate the grey areas of the South African wallet. It launches on 25 March on @News24 and is powered by @gotymebankza.

I will be hosting a panel discussion at the Risk Ready Forum on 25 March on strengthening South Africa’s financial crime resilience. As a consumer financial journalist, I am increasingly concerned about the risks consumers face from financial crimes, particularly their rapid increase and sophistication. I am looking forward to discussing these issues with a great set of panelists, and I will ask them how we can better manage customer risks across onboarding, monitoring and payments. We will examine the rising risks and trends, both globally and locally. Identify where are the controls breaking down, and what innovation do we need to mitigate these risks. Is it enough to improve security, or do we need far more customer education? Is AI working against us, or for us? Please join our conversation!
