The African Democratic Congress is appalled by recent reports that only about 7 percent of the Nigerian Army’s budget for security equipment has been released in the 2025 fiscal year. Out of the N336.76 billion approved, only a paltry N16.71 billion has reportedly been disbursed, while nothing has been released for critical logistics such as transport, aircraft fuel, and military barracks. At a time when Nigeria is battling widespread insecurity, this is not just disturbing, it is indefensible. It is yet another example of a government that talks tough on security but fails to back it up with action. Even more alarming is that this disclosure comes as Nigerians confront yet another national tragedy. Reports indicate that over 400 women and children abducted in Ngoshe, Borno State are now the subject of a N5 billion ransom demand by Boko Haram, with a 72-hour ultimatum and a chilling threat that the victims may be dispersed and never seen again if the government fails to act. This is the painful reality of our country today: a country where terrorists feel bold enough to issue deadlines to the state; a country where hundreds of citizens can be held hostage while the government underfunds the very military meant to protect them. The connection between these two realities is direct. When only a fraction of security funds is released, when nothing is provided for logistics like mobility and fuel, and when equipment procurement is delayed, the result is predictable: a weakened security system. And when the state looks weak, those who threaten it grow stronger, with devastating consequences for ordinary Nigerians. Even more troubling is the contrast in priorities. While the military struggles with chronic underfunding, the federal government has reportedly ensured full funding for the luxurious presidential air fleet enjoyed by President Tinubu and his immediate family, even as military aircraft remain grounded due to a lack of resources. This paints a troubling picture of a government that is more concerned with comfort at the top than safety on the ground. A government that releases only 7 percent of security equipment funds, and nothing for critical logistics, cannot claim to be serious about winning the war against terror. You cannot starve our brave men and women in uniform of the tools they need and expect them to defeat a determined and well-armed enemy. This is not just a budgeting failure, it is a failure of leadership. The consequences are clear. Communities remain exposed. Farmers cannot return to their farms. Businesses continue to operate under fear. And now, hundreds of women and children face an uncertain fate in the hands of terrorists. The ADC believes that security funding must be treated as a first-line responsibility. Budgetary allocations must translate into real, timely releases for equipment, logistics, training, and intelligence. Anything less weakens both the morale of our armed forces and the safety of our people. Nigeria does not lack resources. What we lack is the discipline to put those resources where they matter most. The ADC stands with the families of those abducted and calls on the federal government to act with urgency, clarity, and resolve to secure their safe return, while addressing the deeper failures that have made such tragedies possible. The ADC remains committed to building a Nigeria where security is not just promised, but properly funded, carefully managed, and truly delivered.

You are 79 years old, @atiku. You will be president at 80 years of age in 2027, if elected. You’ll be 84 by the end of a first-term in 2031 and 88 by the end of an eight-year presidency in 2035. And you expect Nigerians, the majority of whom are under the age of 30, to take you seriously?

We are in the era of federalism. Every region is getting a security training school or military installation, as opposed to what’s obtainable before where major training institutes are in one place. A new Nigerian Army training depot has been established in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State and it’s under construction. Police training schools have been established in Benin and Calabar. Counter Terrorism Unit schools in Nonwa-Tai (Rivers) Marine Training School in Toru-Orua (Bayelsa) Police School of Nursing and Midwifery (Ezimo, Enugu) Police School of Finance and Administration (Umueri, Anambra). Police Short Service Training Institute (Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom) I only mostly post news that directly or indirectly involves Ogun State.

@ADCVanguard_ It actually a proof of one Nigeria to replicate national assets across the federal territory instead of just one region. That's why it's a federation. You are quite dumb in your take here. We'll need more in South East and South South. Nigeria is for all Nigerians.

Newspaper Review… when you're the Vice President showing the experience you claimed.. March 2005: NBC shut down Freedom Radio (Kano) for two weeks, citing violations of the broadcasting code. Activists and journalists at the time linked it to the station airing a song critical of President Obasanjo’s alleged third-term bid. This was presented as enforcement for content that allegedly overheated the polity. 23 October 2005: NBC shut down RayPower Radio and Africa Independent Television (AIT) — leading private stations owned by DAAR Communications — for alleged “unprofessional coverage” of a plane crash (Bellview Airlines Flight 210). 28 March 2006: NBC imposed specific sanctions on Freedom Radio, including a N200,000 fine (payable within 48 hours), a ban on operations between 5 pm and 10 pm daily, and prohibitions on political programmes plus certain Hausa-language shows (e.g., Kowa Ya Tuna Bara, Kowane Gauta, Kowane Tsuntsu). Sir, the Internet never forgets ooo
Atiku Abubakar@atiku

The Code of Conduct advisory issued by the National Broadcasting Commission is yet another troubling attempt to muzzle the media and shrink the space for free expression in Nigeria. Our media industry has grown into a formidable institution, respected globally for its resilience and professionalism. It is therefore alarming that, each time elections approach, the NBC resorts to heavy-handed directives that do more to silence dissent than to uphold ethical journalism. I stand firmly with Nigeria’s broadcast industry and all media platforms resisting this creeping censorship. Let it be clear: ethical standards are not seasonal tools to be weaponised during campaigns, they are constant obligations. The timing and tone of these regulations expose a deeper agenda. It signals a government more interested in controlling narratives than permitting a free, fair, and transparent electoral process. –AA

FEDERAL MINISTRY OF FINANCE PRESS STATEMENT FALSE ALLEGATION OF HIDDEN SPENDING AND DIVERSION OF FEDERATION REVENUE The attention of the Federal Ministry of Finance has been drawn to recent media reports and commentaries that misrepresent the findings of the latest Nigeria Development Update by the World Bank, particularly claims suggesting that a significant portion of federation earnings is being “diverted” or constitutes “hidden spending.” These interpretations misrepresent the World Bank’s analysis and reflect a misunderstanding of the fiscal system. MISINTERPRETATION OF FAAC DEDUCTIONS The misreporting in question incorrectly characterises Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) deductions as “waste” or missing funds. This is incorrect. FAAC deductions, as presented in the World Bank report, include: Statutory transfers, Savings and investments, Security-related expenditures, Cost-of-collection charges, Refunds to Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), Transfers and interventions benefiting subnational governments. It is important to emphasise that refunds and transfers to states and other tiers of government are not leakages. They represent legitimate fiscal flows, including repayments of obligations and statutorily backed allocations. SELECTIVE USE OF OUTDATED DATA Some commentaries selectively relied on past data while ignoring the forward-looking analysis and ongoing public financial management reforms highlighted in the report. The World Bank explicitly notes that reforms implemented in early 2026, including the recently signed Executive Order to safeguard remittance of petroleum revenues, are already addressing concerns around deductions, and are expected to improve transparency while increasing revenues available to all tiers of government by about 0.4% of GDP annually. Misinterpreting one aspect of the analysis without acknowledging the progressive reforms and measures already introduced to enhance distributable federation revenues gives a distorted picture. STRONGER MACROECONOMIC FUNDAMENTALS The broader message of the World Bank report is positive and forward-looking: Economic growth is becoming more broad-based across sectors. Inflation, while still elevated, is declining due to deliberate policy actions. Nigeria’s external position has strengthened significantly, with improved reserves and a current account surplus. Debt indicators have improved, including a decline in the debt-to-GDP ratio, the first in over a decade. These developments reflect the outcomes of the current administration's ongoing macroeconomic policies and public financial management reforms. THE REAL MESSAGE OF THE REPORT The World Bank does not conclude that Nigeria’s fiscal system is collapsing or that reforms have failed. Rather, it states that reforms are working, and they must be sustained and deepened to translate macroeconomic gains into inclusive growth. CONCLUSION The Federal Government remains committed to strengthening fiscal transparency, improving revenue mobilisation, ensuring efficient public spending, and deepening reforms to support inclusive economic growth. An accurate understanding and responsible reporting of fiscal information are critical to maintaining confidence in Nigeria’s reform trajectory and economic outlook. We urge stakeholders, media organisations, and the public to engage constructively with fiscal information and avoid twisted interpretations that may undermine reform efforts and fuel public discord. Signed Taiwo Oyedele Honourable Minister of State for Finance, Federal Republic of Nigeria April 19, 2026
