Today, we pause to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Across generations, through changing times, disagreements, and different leaders, they answered a call bigger than politics or any single moment. They served something larger than themselves. On Memorial Day, we remember their sacrifice, honor the families who carry it, and recommit ourselves to building communities worthy of what they gave.

Last week, Memphis @mayorpaulyoung visited two MSCS schools, Kate Bond Elementary and Lucie E. Campbell. At Kate Bond, Mayor Young leaned into the importance of literacy by reading to a classroom full of first graders. At Lucie E. Campbell, the mayor encouraged and inspired scholars to aim high and achieve their goals.

Rev. Jesse Jackson carried the fight for justice forward after Dr. King. His courage opened doors for so many of us. I’m grateful I had the chance to thank him. Praying for his family. Our world has lost a mighty light.

It was brought to my attention that I used the wrong pronouns when addressing Brandy Price at last night’s State of the City. It was not intentional and apologize for that. I respect her gender identity, our LGBTQ+ community, and I am grateful for the grace to learn, grow, and keep showing up for every Memphian.
