Principal among suspects in Cwecwe rape case as DNA evidence secured, says Police Minister Mchunu
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has confirmed that Jaco Pieterse, the principal of Bergview College, is among three suspects implicated in the rape case of a seven-year-old girl, Cwecwe.
The case has sparked national outrage, and Mchunu's announcement marks a significant step forward, as DNA samples have been collected from all three suspects.
Speaking at a press briefing, Mchunu assured the public that the investigation was progressing, with forensic evidence now secured. "As of March 30, we can confirm that all three suspects, including Mr Jaco Pieterse, have had their DNA samples collected," Mchunu said. He emphasized the priority status of the case for the South African Police Service (SAPS), pledging that justice would be pursued swiftly.
The case has drawn intense scrutiny, particularly surrounding Pieterse, who was a respected figure in the community. Allegations surfaced that he initially resisted cooperating with authorities, but the confirmation of DNA evidence has now dispelled earlier doubts. The investigation has raised questions about the integrity of institutions entrusted with the care of children, and the reaction has been swift. Parents at Bergview College have voiced their anger, with some calling for the school to be closed until the investigation concludes.
“How can we trust someone in that position?” asked Nomvula Khumalo, a mother of two students at the college. “This is a betrayal of our children.”
Cwecwe’s family, has placed their trust in law enforcement to handle the case. Child welfare experts have underscored the importance of providing trauma support to the victim and adopting a child-centered approach throughout the legal proceedings.
As the investigation continues, Mchunu reiterated the government's unwavering commitment to tackling gender-based violence and child abuse, issues that remain a serious concern in South Africa. "No one is above the law," he stated. "We will ensure accountability for this heinous act."
