Mekatilili wa Menza, a Giriama leader from coastal Kenya, used traditional dances, powerful speeches, and sacred oaths to unite her people against British colonial rule in the early 1900s.

Jaja of Opobo, born enslaved in Bonny, rose to found the Kingdom of Opobo in 1869. A powerful palm-oil merchant, he challenged British trade control, was exiled in 1887, and died in 1891—remembered as a symbol of African resistance and economic independence.
