As teachers we are always looking for ways to help our students and ways to help ourselves improve our craft. Professional learning can help add some great tools and resources to our toolboxes that help us help our ESOL students. #huskychat

We all get very excited when we see the progress our ESOL students make. Sometimes we get so excited that we feel very little to no support is needed. As teachers we continue to support and enrich them whenever we can and at whatever milestone they are at. #huskychat

@drmcgaughy Yes, they are very helpful in making you aware of where your students are and what they can do at each level! The descriptors help you understand what the student can do at listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

A2: We receive the WEDA(?) rubrics for speaking and listening that really help us to understand the different levels of English proficiency. #huskychat

Newcomer ESOL students who are new to the U.S. and don’t speak English, face a variety of challenges both inside and outside of school. While we have them at school, we can make them feel comfortable, increase their confidence, and support language acquisition. #huskychat

@Johnson_KellyA Yes! Relationships are everything! The stronger the relationship the more comfortable and relaxed the students are.

Q1: #huskychat I use a lot of repetition and really try to focus on forming a relationship with the student first. In upper grades I used tons of pictures to support vocabulary esp. for math.

Our commitment to the academic growth of our ESOL students begins with instruction. Using the access score report can show strengths and weaknesses, what students can do at their level, and target our instruction to fill in gaps. #huskychat

@DrHeiberger Preloading vocabulary is a great way to get your ESOL students more comfortable with the text the will be reading!

Q1: I always try and provide vocabulary ahead of time to help support any of the language they might not be familiar with that will be in the text. #huskychat

There are a number of ways to support the language acquisition and literacy development of ESOL students that allow students to participate more fully in classroom activities and promote academic growth. #huskychat
