A story of my journey I have never told anyone simply because it was so asinine and not worthy of repeating because I thought it would just be a fluke in publishers: Me after a rejection: May I ask why? Publisher (or agent, I honestly can’t remember, it was 2007): It’s a great story, no complaints that some editing wouldn’t fix. No one is buying Viking novels right now. Would you be willing to change the culture? Keep the story the same but instead of Viking, make it a slave ship from Africa. Me: You mean like Amistad? Them: Yes! Me: But the viking age and Viking culture are nothing like that movie. Them: You can’t make it work? A gifted writer could make it work. Me: (Stunned at the absolute stupidity) I don’t care how gifted a writer is, you’re essentially asking me to turn the lifecycle of a pear into the story of a dandelion without changing the story of the pear. Them: If you’re unwilling to make this slight adjustment, I can’t help you. Me: (at this point just dumbfounded but no intention of hiring them) That’s fine. Even if it were possible, I wouldn’t because I wrote this story as an homage to my ancestors. Them: No one cares about your ancestors but you. You’ll never sell a book if you make it all about your story. Me: Are you saying no one is interested in Viking stories? Them: Yes. Me: (begin to gather all of the popular Viking stories on shelves and in theaters. email notification as I’m writing) Them: Okay, what if instead of changing this one, you write a new one and submit it. Make it what I asked for, and we’ll talk. Me: You want me, a white girl with only experience writing about Vikings and English drama, to write you a story about black slaves on a Viking-like ship encountering African gods? Them: Yes! Send me 500 pages of what you can do with that, and we’ll go from there. Me: (absofuckinglutely not but still flabbergasted) And my Viking story? Them: I’m sorry, Lily, but that won’t work for me. It’s the idea I presented or nothing at all. Me: (after several hours or maybe a whole day of wrapping my head around the level of incompetence and balldacity) Are you hiring me? Them: Pardon? Me: This would be a commission, so I think we need to discuss my fee. I never heard from them again. I went on to do erotica commissions, though 😂.

The story is called Stuck on Fairview Loop, which is a road here. A guy I worked with said that one day, and I thought, "Great title for a story!" It's about a guy stuck in traffic like he was, and strange things start happening. Then he gets home, sees his neighbor get torn apart by sasquatches, gets his gun and engages, ends up in hand to hand, survives, and, well... big showdown/shootout at our local hospital with a bunch of other people and our esteemed Alaska State Troopers against the horde. It's a bit adventure/satire/homage to my home state and was great fun to write!
