I had the privilege of presenting at the International Parliament Roundtable on Human–Wildlife Co-existence, engaging fellow legislators and partners on an issue that defines daily life in Maun. This is a matter that deeply resonates with and is a priority area for @BCPBotswana. For our communities, this is not an abstract conservation debate but a lived reality shaped by long turnaround times in responding to wildlife damage, compensation levels that do not reflect real losses, and policies that exclude certain predators despite their frequent impact on livelihoods. These challenges erode trust and place an unfair burden on subsistence farmers and livestock owners. In Parliament, I have consistently advocated for a review of these policies, including on the issue of the buffalo fence which needs long-term, sustainable solutions that place communities at the centre, rather than relying on reactive and temporary measures. Botswana’s conservation success must now translate into coexistence governance that protects livelihoods, strengthens resilience and ensures that conservation remains not only globally admired, but locally supported and socially sustainable. Despite the significant revenue generated from tourism in wildlife-rich areas like Maun, poverty levels in surrounding communities remain unacceptably high, exposing a deep disconnect between conservation wealth and local livelihoods in Botswana. This gap underscores the urgent need for more equitable benefit-sharing mechanisms so that communities bearing the highest costs of conservation also share meaningfully in its economic returns. #humanwildlifecoexistence #conservation #Maun #askdumelang
