@CanWombatsJump @ClintVSmith One explanation could be that more countries are involved in international testing. 32 countries participated in the first PISA study in 2000. 81 participated in the 2022 study. You'd really need to only include those first 32 for a meaningful indication of change in our ranking.

@ClintVSmith And yet New Zealand continues to tumble down the international rankings for student achievement, how do you explain that one?

@susurrus_nz @PouTepou Many people I know who do this out their kids to bed at 7, then work till 11 or so to get everything done. Others I know bring their kids in to school early and start working then, they pop out to drop them off one day care opens. There’s no way any of them are just doing 9-3.

@PouTepou There are a number of teachers (both secondary and primary) that go to the same community preschool as my children. They pick up their children just after 3pm everyday. The preschool opens at 8.30am and closes at 3.30pm. They are literally doing 9am-3pm.

Teacher only days are important. They give teachers the ability to plan and organise. I think the Minister thinks teaches turn up at 9 am and go home at 3 pm. Monday to Friday. This simply is not true. Our teachers work bloody hard.

Submissions to this name change proposal close in a week, please follow this link and indicate whether you support the correction of the name back to Pito One or if you’d prefer continuing with the incorrect and meaningless spelling of Petone. linz.govt.nz/consultations/…

History geeks I'm struggling. Student is researching the Musket Wars and has some primary evidence to use but wants more. Where should they be looking that can be accessed online?

@JoannaKidman Or some fancy ice blocks like the Paekākāriki Pops? If they’re not eating much something cold and delicious to suck on can be nice.

@JoannaKidman What about taking an audio recorder and asking them some interesting questions - I would have loved that when my Dad was dying. They could play it to people now and their loved ones could have it as a momento later. Of course that depends on how groggy they are.

Goldsmith defends cutting funding of children's lunches from $8 to $3 per meal by claiming there will be no more woke "quinoa sandwiches." Is there any evidence of these quinoa sandwiches or is this just a lie to justify cutting kids lunch costs by 63%? twitter.com/StrayDogNZ/sta…
Nick@StrayDogNZ

Here's historian and Minister for Arts, Culture & Heritage, Paul Goldsmith, calling quinoa sandwiches woke. I wonder if Goldsmith actually knows the history of the word 'woke.'

Weird, the Ka Ora, Ka Ako website doesn't list any school lunch recipes featuring quinoa, couscous or hummus. It's almost like this "no more woke foods" soundbite is simply culture war bs to hide that the fact that they're cutting funding of kids' lunches from $8 a meal to $3.

@nic_taewa They said it included staff who deliver the programme - does that mean contractors who supply the food?

Why on earth do we need 40 roles at MOE for school lunches when it is the schools and contractors who do the bulk of the work relating to it. rnz.co.nz/national/progr…

David Seymour announced pared back regulations for ECE centres. That's all very well until we have abused, injured or a dead child as a result. They're also professionally unsafe regulations for teachers. These regulations were put in place for a reason. nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/as…

I’m a teacher but I want to hear from others What’s a great teacher appreciation gift from a parent? (I would like tangible suggestions. I’m super supportive of all her teachers and I believe support should be a given, not a gift to them)

Seriously. Trusted civil servants are telling us that @EricaStanfordMP and the @NZNationalParty have also started attacking the delivery of professional learning tailored to help teachers build cultural competency and integrate mātauranga Māori. Why attack these things? #nzpol

#nzpol journos - you need to have a dig about National killing off the NCEA Implementation team. We have several more years of delivery on this, that schools desperately needs implementation support on, and I am hearing they have fired the whole team.
