Chase DeLauter (Cleveland Guardians) is hitting .459 this spring (1.373 OPS).
But he’s always hit.
The bigger change is his body finally feels good.
He’s dealt with soreness for a while. Now he’s moving without managing it.
Biggest cue:
Load late
That let him stay on his front side to start longer and get back to it quicker, shortening his stride a tick and allowing him to turn around his front leg more letting the hands be free and not stuck behind.
Used PVC constraints to help the feel for his front-extension, but “load late” was the key.
Nothing drastic. Just better timing.
And you’re seeing it this spring.

Motor shoulder = upper body driver
One shoulder sits more forward → shapes movement + gives easier ROM to the opposite side
Front motor shoulder:
Counter rotates the front side, leverages it, more aggressive into it
Back motor shoulder:
Keeps shoulders more in line with the target, finishes around, often feels like driving with the back shoulder
This lives on a continuum + interacts with other preferences
It's a small part of the mechanics that can have a major impact.
Problems show up when you fight it:
Back MS closing too much → inconsistent release, glove side issues, arm side high misses
Front MS not using front side → spinny, poor command
You can do both
It just costs more
For coaches trying to better understand how their athletes move, Level 1 Baseball/Softball eCourse is a great place to start.

At the start of the season, athletes are very adaptable.
As the season goes on, that changes.
Not because they can’t make certain movements…
…but because it costs more.
More effort. More energy.
That’s when you start to see:
→ Slower recovery
→ Less consistency
→ More injuries
Motor Preferences explains why.
Most coaches see it.
Few actually know how to fix it.
If you want a clear system to apply with your athletes:
