Like many Arab-speaking peoples, the Palestinians are a rich mixture of all the peoples whose genes have passed through the Levant over the centuries: Caananites, Philistines, Samaritans, Egyptians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Crusaders, Turks-- and Jews. They didn't arrive in a single job lot in the sixth century, as many imagine: the Arab invasions consisted of only a small warrior elite, leaving the population unchanged. As recently as the 1922 Census, about 10% of Palestinians were Christian, 10% Jewish and 80% different varieties of Muslims. New studies of archaeological DNA show a closer match to Bronze Age DNA samples from the region among the modern Palestinian Christians that any other modern group along with the Samaritans, followed by Palestinian Muslims & Sephardic Israelis. They are therefore almost completely indigenous and, in many cases, surprisingly close cousins of Israelis of Middle Eastern backgrounds. For a rich description of Palestinian life during the Ottoman period, I recommend the travels of Evliya Celebi, who paints a picture of a prosperous holy land full of busy ports and bustling sacred shrines.

What's a good mystery/thriller movie for us to watch tonight? Anything from '70s til now, fun & energetic but doesn't have to be a comedy (We've seen the Glass Onions, Clue, The Last of Sheila, Game Night, Confess Fletch, Memento & Charade & want a movie along that general line.)

Do y’all ever think about how wild it is that there used to be multiple species of humans wandering the earth at the same time?

Thirty years ago I very earnestly sent Noam Chomsky my senior thesis (on the mass media and covert ops in Guatemala), and he not only sent me back 5 pages of comments but a year later wrote me this note, by which time I was in a history PhD program. What a mensch.

@rox_the_riot I learned the phrase "artificial urgency" recently and it's changed how I view some of my former managers.

I don't have time to pull this article apart, but remember--when you see a big shift like this in a Google Ngram chart it almost always indicates a change in the books libraries collect, NOT some deep shift in human society that happens to fit a narrative you're attached to (1/3)
John Burn-Murdoch@jburnmurdoch

NEW: analysis of millions of books published over the centuries suggests western society is shifting away from a culture of progress, and towards one of caution, worry and risk-aversion. I think this is one of the most important challenges facing us today.

To those of you that have a million google chrome tabs open: STOP WHAT YOU'RE DOING. Did you know you can group, color code, and collapse tabs into categories?! Yeah, me neither. Right click > add tab to group > new group. You can thank me later.

As far as I know there are no scholarships, funding to support #LGBTQ2 students at risk from developing world facing homophobia, transphobia, including Afghanistan. Do other universities offer assistance? #HigherEd should be refuge for those fleeing persecution to continue studies

I really like the creativity of this! Unfortunately, it’s doing PCA not linear regression. In PCA, the distances are perpendicular to the line. In regression, we’re actually minimizing the vertical distances to the line. 🙂
