Bob Cratchit did not earn less than the minimum wage. The relative real wage of his 15 shilling is £1.26 an hour today or about 15% of the current minimum living wage rate in the UK. But this is a totally unrealistic number. See measuringworth.com/blog.php for the right answer.

Warren Buffett thinks the opportunity cost of his philanthropy is the taxes he would pay that would be used to reduce the U.S debt. Not true. The charity he gives to buys goods and services that, perhaps, another charity would have bought. That is the opportunity cost.
