This is gonna be long. I think part of understanding what’s happening now means being really honest about how much the fandom changed during the military period. It was a difficult time, and it’s true that a lot of Monbebe drifted away, not because they disliked the group, but because the constant flow of content stopped, and many people simply didn’t come back with the same level of engagement. That happens in every fandom. But we also have to acknowledge that fandom effort still matters. Even basic things (sharing links, circulating playlists, watching the MV, reposting TikToks, commenting on posts, creating edits or challenges, boosting achievements) these used to be normal everyday activities in the fandom, and now they barely happen. Ask yourself - when was the last time you commented on every IG post? When was the last time you reacted to a Naver article? And that is not a promotion issue. That’s a participation issue. And pretending that the group is somehow to blame for people not checking in for years isn’t fair, because Monsta X haven’t been hiding. They had a comeback. They posted updates. They released content. Yet there are still fans who had no idea, simply because they weren’t looking. It shifts responsibility away from the simple truth: a lot of Monbebe stopped showing up, and not because the group disappeared, but because when things went quiet, they didn’t seek the members out. They waited to be notified. And that says more about the fandom’s habits than about the group’s effort. If we want better numbers, more visibility, and more momentum, it requires the majority of fans choosing to participate again, even in small ways. Because that’s how fandoms grow, and that’s how artists thrive. And what also needs to be said gently is that the disengagement isn’t because fans have no time. People still have the time and energy for thirst tweets, long threads critiquing “lack of initiative,” essays about how the members “should be doing more,” or how they’re “too complacent” or “lazy.” They have time to gossip or complain that we’re getting another English album while the other two “weren’t that good anyway”, or have expectations are so contradictory and unrealistic that you can feel your brain melting trying to make sense of them. (Some complain about not having nonstop OT6 Korean promos, but also expect zero schedule overlap, and then shout that the group should stay in Korea while simultaneously claiming that the int. audience is being neglected. Some demand year-end award appearances, even for shows Monsta X aren’t invited to, yet in the same breath cry that every thing is a “cash grab.” They want full engagement from every member without any of it looking “forced,” more music but less pressure, more acting opportunities but also more albums, more content but no overworking). It’s hard to see the members being called lazy or not giving a damn anymore when they’ve been working nonstop for a decade, while the same fans making those claims aren’t doing even the smallest forms of engagement that genuinely help. Sharing a link, boosting a playlist, watching a video, or commenting on official content takes a fraction of the time that those critiques do. Yet those basics are often the first things to be neglected. So the issue isn’t that people can’t participate. It’s that their participation is going into commentary about what the group “should” be doing, instead of supporting what the group is doing. It’s absolutely true that the company has its shortcomings, no one is denying that, they suck. But even with imperfect promotion, fan engagement still plays an equally crucial role. Numbers don’t rise, content doesn’t spread, and momentum doesn’t build without the fandom actively showing up. Both sides matter. The company has responsibilities, yes, but so do fans. And right now, the lack of engagement is contributing just as much to the drop in visibility as anything happening internally at SSE.
