I’ve been funding my company entirely from my own savings. Over the last 10 years while working at various jobs, I managed to slowly build an investment portfolio from savings from my monthly salary. But in the past year, I’ve sold most of those investments and put all that money into running my business. The challenge is that the sector we operate in takes time. A lot of time. Our projects have a LONG setup period before they become operational and start earning revenue. Realistically, it may take another 18 to 24 months before we see any meaningful cash flow. Until then, my savings are slowly getting depleted. I always make sure my employees are paid on time, every time. Personally, I live very simply and cut expenses wherever I can. Every bit of money I save helps extend the company’s runway. There are 2 angel investment offers on the table that would provide immediate capital. But at this early stage, the low valuation would mean giving up a significant equity stake in the company for a relatively modest cheque. I haven’t said yes or no to them yet, I’m keeping the option open but I’m cautious. There’s also a strategic partnership offer from a $300B island nation state backed fund. However, they will only step in once the project reaches “investable grade” stage. Getting there will require substantial time and capital. The upside is that once we cross that threshold, capital wont be the constraint anymore, we’ll likely have multiple VC & PE funds competing to fund us. So yes, the next 18 months will be tough. It will mean disciplined financial juggling and conscious trade offs often choosing between personal comfort and extending the company’s runway. The good part is that I have a ride or die co-founder who’s fully committed to the grind. Im not building this alone and that makes all the difference.
