He was once a carefree boy, chasing freedom across wide open fields. Life, love, and loss would shape him into something far deeper — a man torn between adventure and responsibility, passion and heartbreak. a.co/d/h2P8x5U

On The Road With Al & Ivy Blog: July 7th entry Topic: Riffing on AI, if society doesn’t figure out how they will deal with AI, the tech industry will do it for them. Note: In discussing AI, I describe the various attitudes that have come up to present a fuller picture. The intent isn’t to give a right answer but to ask relevant questions.  One reason that AI is growing so fast, besides the fact it's being shoved down our throats, is that on a street level it's providing a lot of benefits, both real or perceived.  Looking at the Indie book industry, for example, one can get an AI editor and book creation software and compare that to the expense of a live human editor, book cover artist, book ad and video trailer creator, DIY books or perhaps a consultant to help you with creating (or copying) new plot points and stuff if you run out of ideas.  So that's the crux of the matter, it's fairly obvious that while Society is still coming to terms with how to judge it both socially and legally, AI will win out because of the real and perceived benefits to the average person. Business tends to outrun reflection and caution. The point about social mores and attitudes surrounding AI evolving is a relevant conversation. It may be a situation where the various commentators and experts on society might need to stop commenting and analyzing the effect of AI on the society as a whole and to start looking at how it's affecting individual behavior, social intercourse and art for profit. One good question: if an architect designs a house, is it considered valid expression if it takes a small army of craftsmen to make it a reality? Does the fact that the architect doesn’t personally build anything make the house invalid as a creative work? One can extrapolate that to AI; is creating a text description or prompt and having the software create the images or video similar to an architect designing a house? To what extent is the normal cross fertilization of art and influences legal if it’s been automated en masse by AI without the proper regard for copyright law. That’s not so cut and dried now in the market place and industry, who’ve quickly evolved ways to access people’s data to train their bots.  The answer probably is that there is no one single answer when it comes to art and how AI relates to it. However, until all the various attitudes are reconciled, there’s probably going to be a lot of conflict between artists and customers as to what extent AI is a valid tool for creativity. These days, almost nobody argues that movie makers can’t use CGI. That’s an area where the issue of art and technology has been reconciled. The evolution of manners and consensus about social behavior and AI will also become an issue. Will it be like the days when cigarettes were prohibited in public spaces and people felt they had the right to shame smokers in public (who rarely responded with the proper level of contrition). However as far as business is concerned, AI is here and with it, a new era. But like the passing of horses and buggies, people will have to realize that how they deal with it and how it changes society is important. People will have to decide how they’ll deal with it on a personal level. If they don’t, how AI affects their lives will be determined by the tech industry and not them. I’ve mainly asked questions, I’ll riff on those in the near future. Feel free to comment, I think the issues are still wide open.  -Al Handa  #artificialintelligence #AI #blog #tech
