Additional thought: there's also something to Evans' character following his heart, so-to-speak, & pursuing a career that isn't lucrative but has meaning to him, to his soul. I feel like every artist gets this - the feeding the soul vs feeding the mouth paradox we live in.

There's many ways to get at this issue/theme. Another writer might do it differently. I personally love that I'm still thinking about the movie, the commodification of love, our hearts & human value & the idea of dating as a marketplace with risks like sexual assault built in.

I love this answer because I actually cried during Materialists at the way that every character except Chris Evans' seemed to hate themselves and lack self love and feel inherently worthless, & only felt value through relationship to ahem material things & proximity to wealth
