Two things can be true at the same time in marriage. True: One partner needs to work on their perception of comments to not take them as attacks and get defensive Also True: The other partner can work on their timing, tone, and delivery of communication.

Clean up your side of the street in your marriage as you enter into this new year. To create a true clean slate you must be radically honest with your partner and bring everything into the light that has been hidden or withheld.

You can say you value family, but if you work and are on the phone instead of being present, your actions show you don’t value family. Use this time to reevaluate what you value and make the necessary lifestyle changes so that your actions are congruent with what you say.

Every upset this holiday weekend comes from an unmet need or expectation. Most of the time you’ve never expressed it. You either vocalize your upset and complaint or you say nothing and hold it inside (to come out at a worse time later). Neither leads to the outcome you want

Social psychology states that when you are in a good mood you focus more on the positive traits of your partner. When you are in a bad mood, you focus more on the negative traits. Much of how you perceive your partner has to do with your own psychology rather than on them.

To be a great partner you must learn to accept the attempts your partner makes to repair after a conflict. If you reject these attempts they will soon stop making them and your hangovers will get longer and longer.

The love that brought you together is different than the love that keeps you together. Staying in love requires consistently and intentionally tackling the barriers to your connection, that are bound to show up.
