@BlazeWelling This I find to be a very valid point. I noticed she has so many people in her life. Many aunts and other family members yet none ever seemed to be of a role model to her. Instead, I find that she herself is the role model #EN28510

The texts we’ve read thus far had the role model/helper adult figure. Ole Golly, Mandy, Silas,& Uncle Tommy in Beah’s novel. The tween seems to rely on this figure to mediate their liminal state & help navigate the corruption of other adults/the adult system #285WLU10

#EN28510 It amazes me how much storytelling is shown in this poetry. I can easily picture the world. like her daily use of the buses. on pg 55 the poem Daywork. "to the other side of Greenville where the white people live" is a further example of how she describes her world to us

@tlynne098 As a tween if you recommended this book to me I'd pass just due to the poetry element. Reading it now, I'm enjoying it and understanding the text fully. Even reading it now i assumed it would be more analysis needed. It is disappointing that poetry has such a reputation #285WLU9

Given that Brown Girl Dreaming is written in verse, it makes me wonder if tweens would even bother reading it (sadly). Most of us are taught that poetry is complicated and requires thoughtful analysis, so would a tween read this for leisure? #285WLU9 #285WLU

@AlexandraGeitz That was my exact thought when reading this poem. No matter where she goes or travels that is who she is and she can ever change it #285WLU9

#285WLU9 I wasn't really looking forward to this book, as it is poetry & I'm not the biggest poetry fan. When I think poems I think mostly Romance. it was interesting to see poetry taken seriously & see it in such a different light to the point where I can say I did enjoyed it

@lauryn_reibling #285WLU8 It came off so naturally. Although that wasn't a 'perfect' family it was perfect for him, and just what they needed. As long as parents are able to supply love to a child that is all they need for a family and this book really does show that.

#285WLU8 it amazes me that Bod can live in a graveyard and no one notices. Even when Scarlett tells her parents they assume he's imaginary friend. They never even take a moment to go see him.Kids do make a lot of stuff up but they are also very honest which sometime people forget

@MelanieEN285 #285WLU7 I agree with this. Death is such a taboo subject. Many people in my family don't like to take about it and their way past their tweens. I do think it is an important topic!

A story starting with parents dying is very typical. We have seen it before. Here a man is walking around with a knife shows it is a darker book. I was surprised that the author could pull that off in a way that still is child-friendly. Did anyone find it inappropriate? #285WLU8

Athe interview with Susan Lynn it really put into perspective how much marketing there is for young people. I mean just thinking of the different trends like Tik Tok made me buy this or Instagram made buy it is more proof. There is way more opportunity to market for kids #285WLU6

@AlexandraGeitz Like they say, sex sells. Just think of shows like riverdale. There in high school and I haven't related to them at all in regards to my high school experience #285WLU6

@tlynne098 I agree. When she notes how excited she is that Emma Stone her one friend is going to be at the party I found that to be relatable. Even if it is something like so high scale, we all get excited when we are going to an event and find out a friend will be there too #285WLU6

Demi inspired young girls to overcome mental illness, Brittany has taught girls to fight for their privacy, and Miley has taught girls to be unapologetically themselves. These women may not be perfect but they are inspirational to someone, and Widdicombe overlooks that. #285WLU6

I already knew that Taylor swift wrote autobiographical songs. Yet thinking about it in a tween perspective it kind of seems like her alumbs act as dairies. Something kind of similar to dairy of a Wimpy Wimpy Kid but in a musical format #285WLU6

#285WLU5 seeing how controlling the curse is over Ella's life, it shows how maybe tweens should be given a little be more freedom in their life and decisions. Take pg. 97 for intense where she must stop as she runs away from the ogres.

@AlexiaGalloro It's always refreshing to see that true love isn't the awnser to our problems (becuase it isn't). Love stories are fun to read but I like how this book didn't centre the whole story on char and Ella. #385WLU5

Ella is living everyone's nightmare of always having to do as your told. Yet also gets to live in a fantasy land with gnomes, fairies and even her own prince. Would anyone dare to have her curse but get to live in a fantasy world? #285WLU4

@norr5690 Agreed. Besides Mandy, Ella basically ends up as an orphan. I felt so bad for her losing her mother then seeing how bad how relationship was with her father. Interesting that in the movie they left that out. I was surprised to read it in the book #285WLU4

The representation of the father once again appears to show him being absent from the child’s life. He doesn’t know what to even call her, and he cares more about putting on a front than his own child’s emotions and feeling. #285WLU3

Reading the text you think that the explanation of wordS/phases would be annoying to read and make it seem like the reader isn't the brightest yet lemony does it in a way where it is charming. Was anyone annoyed by the explanation of words/phases? #285WLU3
