Breaking 🚨 The UK government is unveiling a new Mental Health Bill today. This has the potential to be a game-changer for our mental health system if it's bold enough to make radical change.

In the #KingsSpeech, the UK government just committed to reforming the Mental Health Act. We’re over the moon 🎉 This has taken years of campaigning from across the mental health sector and will make a huge difference to people's lives. 1/2

The King’s Speech announces legislation to modernise the Mental Health Act. My thanks to the marvellous team of civil servants, service users, mental health and legal professionals and many more who worked so hard as part of our Independent Review. We are nearly there

On her first visit as Minister for Patient Safety, Women's Health and Mental Health, Baroness Gillian Merron visited @MindCharity's Openhouse where she met volunteers and beneficiaries supported by the service. This government has made #MentalHealth a top priority.

With nearly 2 million people waiting for mental health support, we at @MindCharity know commitments from parties on mental health are desperately needed. More of us might be talking about mental health than ever before, but support is still out of reach for far too many. 1/n

It’s happening. A general election has been called. We want you to know first and foremost that we’re fighting your corner. And we won’t stop until everyone with a mental health problem gets support and respect. (1/2)

People don't choose to be on disability benefits. It's their last resort. Stop blaming people with mental health problems. If the Secretary of State wants a grown-up conversation about this, then he should meet with us. We've sent an invite. 1/3

@MindCharity have a well-being action plan for those working in politics. You need to know what are the small signs you are struggling; use that as a framework of discussion for people around you. Share it when you are in a better place. Build the support system around you”

“Casework and it’s severity is increasing; more people are at a point of crisis. Tip from @MindCharity: have a debrief after a call. Be able to step away for 10 minutes; talk about what you’ve seen. Share it with a colleague. And celebrate the good things” @MeganPennell

Great to speak at @Labour_MH event on looking after your MH in politics. When you work on issues you care deeply about, the boundaries of work/life can be blurred. So, in case you need it, *here's some permission to step away from your phone* and take 5 for you ✨...

Our final speaker is @MeganPennell from @MindCharity “There’s always something we need to do and we often wait for someone to say have a break; but we often don’t get that. It’s not a sign of weakness but a real sign of strength; it’s a way to be a leader and set an example”

Sure a lot of people will be feeling worried by this announcement today and this growing rhetoric. So just a reminder: mental health problems are real, you deserve time & support to get well and @MindCharity won't stop fighting for this.
Mind@MindCharity

Rishi Sunak today announced plans to review the fit note system for people who aren’t well enough to work, with a focus on mental health. His speech continues a trend in recent rhetoric that is stigmatising, harmful, and inaccurate.
