@drkellyscriven there is a lot of antagonistic rhetoric - parents, other services, ancillary staff, etc. there have to be safe spaces to express frustration, but it is far more prevalent than necessary. It starts with us as faculty and leaders of the surgical team changing our own words.

@hartman_bill @SGuptaMD Agree! Surgeon, not an anesthesiologist, but I find the term “peri-operative risk stratification” to be a more accurate representation. All actions (and inactions) have consequences.

Nice thread. One issue- clearance is a taboo term for an anesthesiologist. Every patient and every surgery comes with a particular set of risks. Rather than say “you’re good to go,” we focus on optimizing the patient for the peri-op period. This may require life-style or habit modifications, med tweaks, exercise, diet, etc. A lot more goes into pt prep than just saying they are “clear.”
