As we celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth, I’m reminded that progress isn’t just about looking back—it’s about the path we pave for those coming next. In 1995, I was given three years to live. In the summer of 1998, I became one of the first people to join a Phase 1 clinical trial for a drug then known only as STI571. That drug became Gleevec (imatinib), the first FDA-approved molecularly targeted therapy, changing the face of cancer care forever on May 10, 2001. Now, nearly 28 years since that trial began, I stand as the world’s longest-living survivor of the modern era of FDA‑approved targeted cancer medicine. But survival isn’t just a miracle of science; it’s a result of representation. Black patients have historically been underrepresented in the very trials that create life-saving breakthroughs. My journey is proof that when we have a seat at the table—and a place in the lab—we don’t just survive; we thrive. This Black History Month, I honor the scientists and physicians who looked for a better way, and I advocate for the patients who are still waiting for their breakthrough. Our stories are a shared legacy of courage and a reminder that equity in clinical trials is a matter of life and death. We are still writing the story of progress—one survivor, and one trial, at a time. #BlackHistoryMonth #ClinicalTrials #HealthEquity #CancerSurvivor #PatientAdvocacy

Diagnosed with CML in 1995 & given 3 years—30+ years later, I’m still running the race. Cancer tried to stop me; faith, science & grit kept me going. Never give up! #CMLSurvivor #Gleevec #MelMann
