Had an excellent time at #ESASCBO22, my first ever conference! A really interesting and thought provoking range of content, and many lovely humans. And what an unexpected and delightful surprise to receive 2nd Place for the student poster prize. Until next time! 🌿

I had the pleasure of listening to this talented woman in STEM last week! It was an excellent speech about the importance of inclusivity in scientific research... followed by fun power poses with more amazing researchers! #WomenInSTEM
Erin Bok@erin_bok

Last week I spoke about my research journey as a #WomenInSTEM at the @UTAS_ school of #Naturalsciences recognition evening. I am very fortunate to have been so supported and encouraged, and am lucky to be surrounded by excellent women embarking on our PhD journey 🌿💚

To add to @LisaCraw4 amazing stats - @ourANU have raised PhD stipends by $5k/yr despite expecting a deficit while @UTAS_ reports a ‘small’ $4.6m surplus. Very grateful to @UTAS_ for easing the pressure slightly with a $1k one off payment but more needs to be done @nteu_tas

Some interesting figures which may or may not be relevant: ANU vice chancellor's salary: $484,000/year ANU PhD stipend: 6.5% above the poverty line UTAS vice chancellor's salary: $980,000/year 🤔 UTAS PhD stipend: 6% BELOW the poverty line 🤔

Well done @ourANU 👏 Despite difficult financial situations they are prioritising raising the PhD stipend by ~18% to $34k/yr. @UTAS_ and other uni’s please match this much needed initiative. The planned 3.5% increase for 2023 RTP is a pay cut and puts unnecessary stress on PhDs

Thank you @UTAS_ for listening to your HDR candidates and providing some financial relief while the base stipend rate is reviewed The stipend needs to be > the poverty line & at least = to minimum wage to attract talented researchers from diverse backgrounds @JasonClareMP

In response to our @abchobart interview @LisaCraw4 and I met with @UTAS_ today. I made this graph which validated why it feels so much tighter now than when I started in 2018. The base stipend is now $3260/yr below the poverty line and $743/yr less than CPI increase. 1/n

I will discuss the incredibly sobering, deeply upsetting, and infuriating (because we could have avoided so much of this, if scientists were listened to) 2021 State of the Environment Report, and what must urgently change, on @SBSNews tonight.

Given the grim State of the Environment report released today by @tanya_plibersek, perhaps it's finally time to increase financial support for the people you need to fix these problems? PhD students in Aus earn below minimum wage to complete ~4 years of skilled work. Sound fair?
Erin Bok@erin_bok

Yes Botanists are disappearing, perhaps if there was greater financial support in research, job security and early career opportunities people wouldn't have to choose between financial security or persuing a career in such a field. theconversation.com/botanists-are-… via @ConversationUK
