Trying an interesting experiment in a private (very technical) Discourse community where a large number of members wanted to participate anonymously, but others wanted to use their real name. Added a 'participate anonymously' option next to 'new topic'. #CMGR

@RichMillington This is a big issue and headache as a community manager collaborating with some internal security teams. Security teams usually win in my world and in my experience tend to be less concerned w the customer experience. Can be maddening.

Convenience vs. security is increasingly an issue. The more secure your community is, the less convenient it is. Hence people are likely to avoid the community altogether (or use another platform you don't control). Find the right balance. #CMGR

If you hear the feedback: "I don't have time to participate in the community" What they're really saying is: "The community isn't offering enough value for me to make time for it". Find out what these folks do make time for and you're on to a winner. #CMGR

The thing about saying goodbye to teammates is it pushes us to reflect on what they taught us. What a gift 🧡

@DavidSpinks Bring a mom of a middle schooler I can attest that our family community strengthened huge during Covid. I wonder if that influenced. I was working from home and we were all in it together.

So this is fascinating... The middle school my wife works at collects data on levels of belonging amongst students and parents every year. In the 2020-21 school year, during Covid, being fully virtual, they saw the highest levels of belonging they’ve seen in 6 years.

Observation: Community builders tend to be really strong generalists. Which is part of why we get asked to do some many different things. We’re good at it.

I caused much confusion over the weekend by sending an email to a client on Friday afternoon which included the line: "I can see the benefit of this approach, but my dad says this won't work." ...I meant to write 'data'. 😳

@RichMillington Social currency! I see a lot of comparing and shame in my community as well. Growth mindset reminders help.. (I think?)

Small Rewards In Public Trump Big Rewards In Private Much of the anger and satisfaction we encounter in managing communities is based upon members comparing themselves positively or negatively to other members. buff.ly/3kmZNaZ #cmgr #esn

BREAKING: my husband was just talking to a casual acquaintance whose name he couldn’t remember, so he said “I’m sorry I forget your name?” and the guy told him his name. I didn’t know you could do that??

@RichMillington @caremjo I got stuck in this when first creating our online community 2 years ago. I wanted gamification so badly that it went in this way and it was totally…. Useless! But now we know and round 2 will be wayyy different.

I often feel people designing gamification systems - particularly when it comes to badges - have completely lost touch with reality. via @caremjo. #CMGR
