“You get what you earn”
I had a lot of conversations about this quote this weekend. From parents to college coaches they all agreed it can’t be said for every case.
There are a lot of kids leaving this week empty handed. A lot of kids that were at all the practices, at individuals and extra workouts, managed their weight well, did the necessary things and then some.
They did not get what they earned.
Maybe it wasn’t your best day, maybe it was your opponents best day, maybe it was a controversial call, but more days than not we work to earn a lot more than we get.
A perfect example: my husband. He doesn’t drink or party, he knew his body so well down to the minutes he needed to get a sweat going, he viewed food at fuel and are clean. Doug listened and TRUSTED his coaches and he sacrificed family time and other events to stay disciplined to his goals. He spent countless hours visualizing and dreaming of being on that Olympic stage getting his hand raised. He earned the moment, but it didn’t happen.
The Truth is it’s never guaranteed you will get what you earn. For those that expect victory out of little to no work ethic- yes you get what you earn. On the flip side of that the ones that put in countless quality hours of work and sweat while sacrificing short term satisfaction for long term success. No, you’re not always going to get what you worked so hard to earn. Those hours and days, they can’t be thought as wasted time because you came home empty handed. We can’t be so result based that our thought is “if it’s not guaranteed I’ll get what I earned then why would I even try”.
Part of the beauty of this sport is in the lessons learned during the times you walk away not getting what you earned or desired.
Your confidence may come from your wins, but as JB explained “our fires are reignited from our losses”.
