Nothing cracks me up more than artists giving up on a mix because they don’t like a Mix 1. So let me explain something real quick. What is a Mix 1? Mix 1 is simply an engineer’s first interpretation of the song you sent. His first impression of what the song needs exported for your review & direction. He’s not you. He didn’t make the music with you. He wasn’t there for the vibe, the emotions, or the late-night decisions. He’s a 3rd party receiving stems, and once those stems land, the music is open to a completely different interpretation of how it could sound. The quality of Mix 1 is not directly proportional to how good your engineer is. In most cases, it’s actually the roughest version they can put together just to establish a starting point. If it’s not heading in the direction you want, that’s normal. That’s where feedback, clear notes, and reference tracks come in. Knowing what you want, Learning how to communicate it. Using other songs to explain the sound you’re chasing (we call them ‘Reference tracks’) That’s how the process works; not by writing off because it doesn’t sound like your demo on the first pass. It’s just step one. The magic happens when you guide the process.
