A quintessential @Chabad story shared by @LievSchreiber “For thirty years the Chabad guys showed up at our house and gave us Passover Matzo, which encouraged my grandfather to have a Seder every year, and that is how we shaped our Jewish identity.” @TribecaChabad

Every baseball journalist knows that you don’t talk to a starting pitcher on the day he is scheduled to make his start. Pitchers typically have very careful, practiced routines, and any disruption might throw them off their game. So even a casual greeting — let alone a conversation — is verboten. But 60 years ago, Chabad-Lubavitch representative Rabbi Moshe Feller did just that. He met and had a conversation with a starting pitcher, hours before he was going to pitch — in the World Series. The starter was Sandy Koufax, the ace and leader of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ pitching staff. The date was October 7, 1965 — the day after Yom Kippur. The day before, the Dodgers had begun the World Series near Minneapolis, facing the Minnesota Twins. Game 1 of the World Series traditionally matches each team’s ace against each other, but in a decision that shocked baseball fans around the world, Koufax — who even today is considered one of the best pitchers to have played the game — sat out Game 1 in observance of Yom Kippur. “The Left Arm of God,” as Koufax was nicknamed, had declined to pitch in observance of G-d’s mitzvot. At the funeral of Rabbi Zvi Kogan, Rabbi Levi Duchman—who directs Chabad-Lubavitch in the UAE—pledges “to establish and build Beis Tzvi—a center where people will come together reflecting your warmth.” Kogan, a Chabad-Lubavitch emissary to the United Arab Emirates, was kidnapped and murdered by terrorists. “Our mission is not to hide, to cower, to duck,” Duchman said. “We stand tall. We hold the torch of Torah and mitzvot to show the world we are alive.”

Ivanka and I are saddened by the loss of Rabbi Kogan, who was senselessly murdered to stop the historic bridges he was building between Jews and Muslims in the UAE. The success of his work, in partnership with the bold and positive vision of the Emirati government, has been a shining light in the world and a strong counter to the history of division. Before World War 2, Jews and Muslims lived together throughout the Middle East in harmony for many centuries, celebrating their shared values, and the UAE is leading us back to that time. In the UAE, people of all faiths and backgrounds thrive together in an environment of mutual understanding and respect. Ivanka and I will be donating $1 million to the Chabad of UAE and will redouble our efforts to work with the Jewish community and the country’s leadership to build a resilient, vibrant Jewish community in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. We welcome others to join us in this effort. The constant scapegoating of Israel and the Jewish people benefits no one, other than inept leaders who use hatred to deflect from their own shortcomings. It’s time for the world to channel its collective energy to uplift our shared goals and ambitions. To all who wish to aggravate these historic divides, know that your efforts only strengthen the resolve of the Jewish community to contribute to societies that respect and welcome us. History has shown that those who embrace the Jewish people benefit, and those who persecute the Jewish people ultimately face spectacular defeat. Let us come together from all faiths to pick up where Rabbi Kogan left off and bring his work, and the work of those building the UAE into a thriving destination of tolerance, bridge building and mutual benefit, to new heights.

Rabbi Vogel was an authentic and dedicated soldier of the Rebbe, wholeheartedly devoted to the Rebbe’s shlichus and mission. We have lost a great leader, but we were truly blessed to be guided by him.
