again, this is my stance at least on the ending and the way I perceive it. I am fully open to discourse because I’m still under the belief that the execution wasn’t proper and some characters (Like Asa) were sidelined out in favor of Denji. Narrative wise, I just don’t see how he ends it with the original timeline while also maintaining what made Asa ‘Asa’ (if that makes any sense) and turning Denji away from his hypersexuality.

So, what about the last moment between Asa and Denji? Their love transcends everything. When Asa tells Denji, “Thank you, Chainsaw Man…” it reignites everything of there past history in another universe. Sure, they both are oblivious of the prior timeline ever existing but the way it’s hinted suggests it could be. Denji’s reaction, the way his heart becomes reminiscent of Pochita, likely suggests that.
My only issue is what happens the rest of the cast. I’m guessing Fuji made it open ended so that everyone can come to their own conclusions but the development each character was given feels dead. Is Aki alive? Is Reze a part of Russia and not the Soviet Union given the historical context of the past timeline? Is Fumiko still Fumiko (Fumiko hivemind)? Is my goat Lil D still there waiting for her school festival? It’s all open to interpretation.
TLDR: everything ties up back to the conclusion. Nothing was erased or meaningless because it still impacted the new world and the foundations it was created on. however, the execution wasn’t great (still good) because it makes everything feel useless.

On second thought, let me reiterate this: I don’t think the ending to CSM was awful (it was far from that really) but the execution of how events played out didn’t make sense. I’ll try making sense of it in this:
Part 1 and Part 2 of the story weren’t destroyed or meaningless in this new timeline. I see countless posts saying that all the build up and development of each singular character and plot was essentially erased. I’ll get back onto that later.
Denji had told Asa he’d a create a new world, alongside Pochita, and that she’d be invited to it as well. Denji, at this point in the story, had completed ALMOST all the conditions of creating it (he probably didn’t know tho). He defeated Makima which enabled Nayuta to exist as the supreme control devil and, thanks to his effort of being a good brother, gave Nayuta a livelihood that her past self wasn’t given. The only step that he needed to do was to lay off the mantle: accept the fact that being Chainsaw Man means destruction everywhere else he goes. However, as we had seen in the church arc, he really didn’t want to; he’d rather choose two options. This, coupled with the fact of his hyper-sexuality demeanor, didn’t really help with taking the next step. Everything he had built up for (again, he didn’t know) was about to go to waste when he STILL wanted sex with Yoru. Him getting eaten by that devil that struck him down was probably the best thing that could happen to him in that scenario.
Everything after this gets hypothetical cause of Pochita’s death. Pochita recognized that Denji’s wanting to have sex was bad, awful, and self-destructing. It was also incurable. The dream of a normal life was becoming obscured at every action Denji did during that final arc (excluding the ones with him and Asa) and I’m guessing Pochi thought that he (Chainsaw Devil) was the core reason for this behavior. In act to save Denji, he removed himself entirely from the picture.
This leads us to the new timeline. Pochi was the final condition to actually start this new world. When Denji had said that him and POCHITA were going to create it, he actually meant it. In the new world, the very few instances we see our characters interact, it’s completely different. Power isn’t scared of Nayuta (control Devil). Nayuta still acts like she’s been under the care of Denji in the new world (even if they don’t know each other). Denji doesn’t gain hyper sexuality because he never experienced it from Makima. Why? Because he built this world! Everything he did—the trauma he suffered, the shit he went through as Chainsaw Man, and just his interactions with other characters—are the very foundation of this world. There are still remnants of the old timeline but they haven’t been explored. It’s like turning on your Wii after two decades and playing New Super Mario Bros again just to have the worlds all completed 100% You know you completed, you just don’t remember how exactly you did it. I don’t know if this a weird analogy but this is exactly the world Denji and others are living in right now, just in a more better and sweeter foundation. Sure, you could say Pochita’s sacrifice was Fujimoto’s way of just rushing the end but if you look at it closer, it isn’t. It was simply the last thing required to create this world. No Pochi = No Makima; however, No Denji = Nayuta. Without Pochita, Makima controls the original timeline. Without Denji, Nayuta would never know what it was like to live normally and probably grow up to be another Makima. Another example to this remnant thing is Bucky. We know, as the reader, how critical Bucky was to changing Asa’s life (led to Yoru and such) and we already explored this pathway. But in the new world, Bucky doesn’t end up being the driver for Asa’s downspiral, he ends up being the reason Asa wants to lighten up and make friends.
