Spider-Man traded his marriage to Mary Jane to save his dying aunt. The marriage got erased from history so completely that even Mary Jane forgot it ever happened. The new movie's title is pulling straight from that comic storyline. Aunt May had been shot, and she was dying. Peter had tried everyone who might save her, including Doctor Strange and Tony Stark, with no luck. Then a Marvel villain named Mephisto showed up and offered Peter a deal. He could save Aunt May, but the price was his marriage to Mary Jane. Mephisto would erase it from history so it had never happened. Peter took the deal. That kicked off a 2008 follow-up comic called "Brand New Day," where the world has forgotten Peter is Spider-Man and his whole personal life has been rewritten. The marriage had stood for 20 years in the comics, since a famous 1987 wedding issue. Four issues erased it. The guy running Marvel Comics at the time, Joe Quesada, pushed for it. He felt a married Spider-Man aged the character and limited the stories you could tell with him. Writers had been trying to break them up for years. Killing Mary Jane off was rejected as too dark. A divorce was rejected because it would have suggested Peter and Mary Jane gave up on each other, and Marvel wanted to keep their love story intact. The magical do-over was the workaround they landed on, and comic fans still bring it up as one of the worst calls Marvel ever made. No Way Home did the exact same thing at the end. Doctor Strange casts a spell, and everyone forgets Peter Parker exists. The movie went further than the original comic. In the books, the world only forgot Peter was Spider-Man, while Peter himself was still known to his friends and family. In the movie, Peter has been wiped from everyone's memory completely. MJ, Ned, Happy Hogan, all of them, total blank. Peter is the only person left in the world who still remembers any of it. The new movie picks up four years after that spell. Peter is living alone, fighting street crime in a city that has no idea who he is, watching MJ live next door as a complete stranger. In the trailer, Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner tells him his DNA is mutating, which references a 1971 Spider-Man comic where Peter actually grew four extra arms. The tagline "the world has forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn't forgotten them" is the cleanest version of the comic's "Brand New Day" storyline Marvel has put on screen. Comic readers reacted to that title for a reason.
