Thunderstorms are currently pinging in northern Cook Strait and the North Taranaki Bight this morning ⛈️ 👇 Showers will be continuing through today with a chance of squally thunderstorms along the west coast from the Glaciers to New Plymouth. But that’s not all, it’s turning bitterly cold for the South Island (combination of very cold air and strong winds). 🌨️ Windy for Christchurch, and lots of snow on the road 🍃 🍃 Alongside our existing watches for strong winds for parts of the South Island and Wellington, a new Yellow Strong Wind Watch has been issued for Christchurch and Banks Peninsula during Friday evening.

🧥 Wind chill measures how much the air cools us down due to how fast it is moving. Still air allows our bodies to form a layer of warmer air around us, but that gets stripped away once the wind start blowing, exposing us to the cold air.

🍃 Strong winds and frigid air mean bitterly cold southerlies are on the cards 🧊 🥶 Strong Wind Watches for the lower South Island coinciding with cold air will result in very low wind chill values, possibly as low as -2°C for Invercargill on Friday afternoon.

🌧️ To the west we can see a large front approaching, with warmer northwesterlies starting to push over the alps. 🍃 The wind has begun to pick up ahead of the front. Keep an eye out for our next severe weather update around 10-11am at metservice.com/warnings/home

🌦️ After a few very cold nights, the frost is out and rain is in ❄️ 📈 Temperatures are much warmer this morning, with frosts quite a bit harder to find. They still lurk in a few places, with most of the coldest places in the country in the North Island.
