When people say the Professor is just one person who sits in one place, that may be true — but let’s not forget how universities work. A Professor sets exams and sometimes sends invigilators to supervise on his behalf. Yes, some students may still find ways to cheat (chukuli), but it is the Professor’s responsibility to create a marking scheme that exposes such malpractice. In the end, the bulk of responsibility stops at his desk.
If malpractice happens and he endorses it, then he becomes part of the problem. Nigerians have entrusted him with one of the highest responsibilities in the land — the independence of our electoral commission — and with that comes the expectation of nothing less than transparent, free, and fair elections.
We cannot continue to make excuses for public officials. A Professor, by virtue of his training and intellect, should know when integrity demands resignation. If at anytime during his sting at the helm of affairs, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), the INEC Chairman, finds that he cannot uphold the standards expected of him, then he should step aside and preserve his name. No excuses, Professor.
