During covid my nephew metamorphosed into a phenomenal guitarist and songwriter. Here's the first single from the band he fronts (guitar/vocals: Evyn Smith, drums: Rhidd Smith, bass: Croc Smith, yes they're a talented family). Best consumed LOUD. open.spotify.com/track/7nrj2C4f…

Our findings have implications for the capacity and predictability of species to persist in the face of anthropogenic change, as organisms with high levels of plasticity may also be much better equipped to deal with rapid environmental change.

We exposed the mine and coastal plants to both salt and zinc, measured changes in the expression of genes in the plant’s roots, and investigated whether the responses fit the patterns we would expect if plasticity has aided adaptation.

I'll be giving a talk tomorrow at virtual @evol_mtg about our quest to describe the major reproductive strategies of 🌸🌴angiosperms🌿🌻at 15:45 CEST / 9:45 EDT in the "Macroevolution & Ecology" session - if you are attending hope to see you there!

Check out our two new papers in Nature Communications! Based on a two years evolution experiment they show how bee pollination and aphid herbivory interact with soil type to promote divergent evolution rdcu.be/dCFSp and local adaptation rdcu.be/dLanU in plants

Great to see this work led by @OwenGOsborne @Carlybacter out! What shapes salamander skin microbiomes? 🦠 Find out 👇
Carly Muletz Wolz@Carlybacter

Appalachian salamanders are beautiful! We show #salamanders pick up the bacteria on their skin from the environment in a species-specific way & this salamander-bacteria #phylosymbiosis relationship explains, in part, how susceptible they are to a pathogen academic.oup.com/ismej/advance-…

Can we still detect #extinct #megafrugivores' seed dispersal legacy in Malagasy palms' genetics? Yes! However, current frugivores only affect small-fruited palm connectivity, highlighting the crucial role of large frugivores in large-fruited plants' dispersal @RenskeOnstein @idiv
Journal of Ecology@JEcology

Species interactions from 1000+yrs ago still shape genetics today. The legacy of extinct #megafrugivores🐒, achieving long seed dispersal, is reflected in the population genetics of Malagasy #palms formerly dispersed by such animals @LauraMendezCue besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/13…

New pre-print! We looked at whether phenotypic plasticity towards environmental cues only present in ancestral habitats (past-cue plasticity) promotes rapid adaptation to completely different cues in new habitats. doi.org/10.1101/2024.0…
