Sean McDermott walked on to the Football Team at William & Mary (FCS) in 1993. He was a former Prep Champion Wrestler and his Head Coach Jimmye Laycock said, "He was relatively shy, but he had the mentality of a wrestler." McDermott's relentless work ethic took him from Walk-On to Team Captain and All-Conference Safety by his senior year. I also earned him a scholarship. Laycock said, "He was like a coach on the field. He might make a physical mistake... but he never made a mental mistake." His Football IQ and Leadership earned him a role on the William & Mary coaching staff as soon as he graduated. One characteristic set McDermott apart as a coach: "If he saw something that needed to be done, he did it. Whether it fell under his job title or not... he got it done." said Head Coach Jimmye Laycock. McDermott left William & Mary for an opportunity in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles. He worked his way from the Scouting Department to Defensive Coordinator. After several seasons as the Defensive Coordinator for the Carolina Panthers, McDermott finally had the opportunity to become the Head Football Coach of the Buffalo Bills. His college coach Jimmye Laycock gave him some advice when he took the job in Buffalo: Laycock said, "Sean, you're a great coach, but you gotta have the right people around you. I don't care how good you are, you need to set the table around you with great people." McDermott has led the Buffalo Bills to the Playoffs in 5 of his 6 seasons as Head Coach.
