I'm currently reviewing the SNEK proposal for a 5 million ADA loan, and I haven’t yet decided how I’ll vote. I do believe a loan is more equitable than a grant. It encourages responsible use of funds. I support it. Anyway, I want to share an observation about meme coins, which may be relevant to the broader context. Take the two most prominent ERC-20 meme coins: Shiba Inu and Pepe. ▪️Shiba Inu has around 1.5M holders, yet only about 6,000 on-chain transactions occurred in the past 24 hours. ▪️Pepe has roughly 480K holders, with a similar number of daily transactions, around 6,000. Despite their popularity, most trading happens on CEXs. For example, Shiba Inu sees millions to tens of millions of USD in volume across ~30 CEXs, while its largest DEX barely reaches $300K in volume. CEXs: DEXs: You will see similar numbers with Pepe. This example highlights the negative impact centralized entities can have on DeFi and the broader on-chain economy. But that’s a deeper conversation for another post. I examined how SNEK’s recent listings on CEXs have affected on-chain activity. ▪️Kraken listing: Volume rose from 1.2M ADA to 2.8M ADA, then dropped back to 1.3M ADA. Interacting accounts increased from 1,800 (11K TXs) to 3,000 (22K TXs), then settled at 1,900 (11K TXs). ▪️Crypto-com and KuCoin listings: Volume climbed from 1.7M ADA to 2M ADA, then declined to 1.1M ADA. Interacting accounts rose from 1,800 (12K TXs) to 3,000 (23K TXs), now down to 1,500 (11K TXs). It can be said that the recent listing on CEXs caused a negligible short-term pump in volume and on-chain activity. Nothing more. In September 2023, on-chain activity was nearly identical to today—around 11K transactions per epoch and 2K interacting accounts. Since then, volume has dropped roughly 5x, from 5M ADA to 1M ADA. Conclusion: CEX listings haven’t led to sustained growth in on-chain volume or transactions. Based on typical meme coin behavior, I don’t expect a significant increase in on-chain activity. Cardano processes 150K–200K transactions per epoch, with SNEK accounting for 5–10% at peak. Interestingly, SNEK currently sees more on-chain transactions than Shiba Inu or Pepe on Ethereum. But as trading shifts to CEXs, Cardano’s SNEK-related activity will likely decline, even if the user base continues to grow. This highlights a key point: meme coin activity is heavily centralized, and on-chain engagement remains limited, even for the biggest names. It’s something worth considering when evaluating proposals tied to meme coin ecosystems. This isn’t a critique of the SNEK proposal, just one part of the bigger picture. It’s important to set realistic expectations about what listing SNEK on CEXs can actually achieve. At its core, the proposal hinges on a key question: Can the SNEK team realistically repay the 5M ADA loan? If the answer is yes, then supporting the loan could be a smart move. I’ll continue analyzing this to reach a well-informed decision.
