Kintsugi is a Japanese art form, dating to the late 15th century, that repairs broken pottery by mending the cracks with lacquer mixed with precious metals like gold, silver, or platinum....
Kintsugi is a direct expression of the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, which celebrates imperfection, transience, and simplicity. Instead of seeing the breakage as a reason to discard the object, kintsugi views it as part of the object's unique history, making it more valuable and beautiful.
The origins of kintsugi are traced back to the Muromachi period, during the 15th century. The legend involves the military commander Ashikaga Yoshimasa. Yoshimasa broke his favorite Chinese tea bowl and sent it back to China for repair. He was displeased when the bowl was returned crudely mended with unsightly metal staples. He challenged Japanese artisans to find a more elegant and aesthetically pleasing method of repair. Craftsmen developed kintsugi, a technique that emphasized, rather than disguised, the cracks.
The repaired object becomes a symbol of resilience, demonstrating that breakage and repair can create something stronger and more meaningful.
The philosophy can be applied to human experience, symbolizing that one's scars and imperfections are not shameful but can be a source of unique beauty and strength.
