TEMPERANCE Temperance is the silent sentinel who guards the portal of the Mysteries. Before a man may receive Light, he must prove that he can bear it. So too the initiate must bridle appetite, restrain excess, and harmonize desire with duty. Temperance is not deprivation; it is mastery. The Hermetic sages declare that ignorance of God is the greatest ill among men . Yet ignorance is fed by turbulence of spirit. The man who is slave to impulse cannot perceive the subtle; the storm within drowns the still, small voice. Thus the gate of the Mysteries opens not to the intoxicated mind nor the ungoverned heart, but to the one who has learned measure. In silence, in moderation, in disciplined joy, the soul becomes a polished mirror. Temperance is the first purification; without it, initiation is but theatre. With it, the candidate becomes a living temple, fit for the indwelling Light
