There is no reason for him to apologize for his comments Crockett is a great rep in her district, she is a good firebrand politician, and in a more liberal state could absolutely win a Senate seat and do a good job in the Senate. BUT, flipping a Senate seat in deep Red Texas, in pro-Trump territory, is not going to be done by a firebrand on the left. You NEED too many swing votes/independents to cross the aisle, and they are votes that tilt Right in Texas. Flipping Texas in the Senate, at least currently, will only be achievable by a moderate - and that’s the math. That has nothing to do with the fact that she is a woman, or that she is black, like some people claim Matt’s comments were about. It has everything to do with the fact she is a strong left candidate who has been very vocal in her identity against Trump who still holds strong state wide influence. Her name recognition and her boldness, whilst normally benefits, are detractors here both in how it plays with swing voters and how Trump will mobilize the base against her. It is okay to have honest conversations about that. It also doesn’t mean she shouldn’t try to have a campaign. But I don’t think her campaign advisors are being honest with her about the lay of the land. Because if she wins the primary, the pivot she needs to make to actually win the State wide general is massive, and I don’t get the sense she is the kind of person who wants to win by compromising on who she is. If she wins the primary, I’d still support her in the general. But I think it’s fair to be honest about the fact that she has an uphill battle that is materially different than that of Talarico. It’s the same as O’Rourke having a different battle with too much name recognition baggage. We need to be able to have those conversations when it comes to political strategy, without it being prosecuted by identity politics. You can like and support Crockett, while still realizing she faces different more difficult challenges in a general election. 🤷‍♂️
